                           2024-2025 Club Policies

The PORT CREDIT SKATING CLUB (“PCSC”, “Club”) is not responsible for loss or damage of property, or injuries sustained by skaters while participating in Club activities.

The Code of Conduct/Ice Courtesy policy applies to everyone. Violations to the PCSC code of conduct will not be tolerated.

The PCSC abides by the Skate Canada Code of Ethics, as well as their Safe Sport (including harassment, bullying, discrimination, helmet use and concussion) policies.

The Board of Directors (“the Board”) reserves the right to change ice times or programs during the year and to pre-empt ice time for Assessment Days and skater development programs.

The Board reserves the right to assess each skater’s qualifications to place him/her in the appropriate program.

PreCanSkateCanSkate and Adult CanSkate participants must wear mittens/gloves and a CSA approved hockey helmet, regardless of age, until they have passed Level 5. Skaters will not be allowed to stay on the ice if they are not wearing approved helmet and mittens/gloves. No stickers are permitted on the helmet in compliance with safety standards.

Skate Canada Membership

        ·        Skaters registering for programs at PCSC will be registered as members of Skate Canada for the current skating season (September 1 to August 31).  Skate Canada membership includes insurance coverage and access to all Skate Canada programs.  PCSC is required to provide skaters’ information, including name, address, and birth date to Skate Canada for membership purposes only.  We do not share this information with any third party.

·        Any skater whose home club is not PCSC must hold current registration with Skate Canada. The Skate Canada number must be provided when creating the “participant” account on the PCSC website. Please ensure that all information provided when creating the account is accurate (skater name, date of birth and Skate Canada number). A Skate Canada Duplication Registration Administration Fee will be charged due to member error in creating a skater’s profile.

 PCSC Membership

  • One parent is a member of PCSC with full voting rights from the date of registration until August 31 of the current skating season.
  • Skaters 18 years of age and over hold their own voting rights.

 Parent Role

  • The term "parent" refers to parents and/or guardians of the skater(s).
  • A skater under the age of 12 must have a responsible adult present at the arena during all sessions.

PCSC Age and Level Qualifications

  • Qualifications for sessions are as of August 31 of the current year. Skaters may be asked to submit a copy of their Assessment Sheet to verify qualifications for assessments passed during the summer and off-season assessments.

Communications

·        PCSC uses its website homepage and email to communicate with members. It is the responsibility of the member to ensure the email address on their account is current.

·        Members may update their email subscription preferences at any time by logging into their profile under My Account => Communication Preferences and clicking the Update button. If a member chooses to opt out of electronic communications from PCSC, they acknowledge that they may not receive important communications regarding club activities and notices regarding program information.

·        PCSC highly recommends that members monitor their spam within their email accounts and ensure that the PCSC Website and email address is added to their Trusted websites/contacts.

·        Members will not be contacted by any other means unless there is an emergency.

Program Assistant Policy

Being part of the Program Assistant Program at PCSC is an incredibly rewarding experience in leadership and community involvement—it looks GREAT on resumés for future job opportunities, as well as on applications for college/university entrance and scholarships. Skaters who commit to a regular PA session at the start of the fall/winter season will earn a personalized Port Credit PA sweater which is reserved to being a club PA!

The CanSkate Programs are a vital part of the Port Credit Skating Club, providing the foundation for our StarSkate Programs. A large portion of the revenue generated from these programs goes directly to covering the ice costs of StarSkate. Without it, ice fees would be considerably higher and the amount of skating time available for StarSkate would be limited. To ensure the success of our CanSkate Programs, the Port Credit Skating Club has adopted the Program Assistant Policy. Members and parents are required to review, discuss, and accept this Policy and indicate that they have read and understand their responsibilities by accepting the agreement before participating in club activities.

a)   all Home and Non-Home Club members, 11 years of age or older as of December 31 of the current skating season are required to become a Program Assistant for Pre-Canskate and Canskate programs for a minimum of 1 session per week.

b)   Program Assistants must be at the Star 2 level or higher. All Program Assistants are required to attend 2 mandatory training clinics at the beginning of the skating season.

c)   Program Assistants must complete a one-time requirement of 20 volunteer hours required by Skate Canada; after which they will receive an account credit for time spent program assisting. Program Assistants will earn $5.00 per hour credit. Account credits are awarded at the end of the skating season and may only be used for club merchandise or club fees such as test and registration fees. The Account credit cannot be exchanged for cash value at any time as per Skate Canada rules and expires one year after the issue date.

d)   Program Assistants are eligible to receive community hours to be credited to their Ontario high school volunteer requirement. A letter will be provided indicating the number of hours that the Program Assistant has accumulated throughout the current skating season.  The skater must choose between the Account Credit or the Community hours as the skater cannot receive both.

e)   Members may choose to pay an opt out fee of $200 if unable to fulfill the Program Assistant commitment. The Club Board of Directors will assess the opt out fee on a yearly basis.

f)   Once a member decides to become a Program Assistant for the season, that member may not decide later to pay the opt out fee. All Program Assistants are expected to attend the sessions they are scheduled for. Should he/she be unable to attend, it is the responsibility of that Program Assistant to find a replacement and inform the CanSkate Coordinators with the replacement’s name in a timely fashion.

g)   If 3 or more sessions are missed without a replacement found or proper advance notice, the status of the skater as a PA will be reviewed.  This could result in the PA potentially being removed from the position and charged the $200.00 opt out fee. The $200.00 will not be pro-rated.

Volunteer Policy (Applies to StarSkate members only) (Revised)

Port Credit Skating Club is a non-profit organization sanctioned by Skate Canada and operated solely by parent volunteers. The Board of Directors volunteers fully volunteer their time to operate the Club and its sessions. The Club needs volunteers to help our CanSkate and other programs run smoothly and efficiently. We also need volunteers for events such as an Ice Show (Carnival) or hosting a Skate Ontario or Skate Canada competition.

  1. StarSkate parents/families of StarSkate 1 and up skaters are required to volunteer 6 hours through the Fall and Winter season for CanSkate and our regular programs. These hours must be split between the Fall and Winter season, 3 hours in each season. For these purposes Fall is defined as running from September through December and Winter runs from January through April.
  2. CanSkate sessions are on Tuesdays (90 mins), Thursdays (60 mins), Fridays (60 mins), and Sundays (90 mins). When volunteering, the volunteer must be present for the entire session for the hours to be counted.
  3. A minimum of 3 volunteers is required at each CanSkate Session – Skater Check-in & Check-out, Skater Assistance getting on & off the ice, and providing general information.
  4. If the StarSkate parent volunteer is unable to fulfill their volunteer commitment, a buyout of $300.00 will be added to their skater’s account. In addition, if parent volunteers have not signed up by the end of February, the buyout will automatically be applied to the skater’s account. This amount will not be pro-rated through the season.
  5. In the event of a cancellation for a specific session, 48 hours notice must be provided to make any changes. If this notice is not provided or if a volunteer is not present for a specific session after signing up, a fee of $50.00 will be charged against the skater’s account.
  6. In the event the club is putting on an Ice Show (Carnival) or hosting a Skate Canada or Skate Ontario competition, StarSkate parents/families are required to volunteer an additional 4 Hours per season for a total of 10 Hours. In these years, the buyout will be increased to $400.00. The same terms from b). to e). will otherwise apply with the increased buyout.

Star Assessment Policy

Port Credit Figure Skating Club (PCSC) has a responsibility to adhere to the rules outlined in the Skate Canada’s STAR Assessment Rule Book.

In addition to Skate Canada’s Rule Book, PCSC has established the following policy as it relates to STAR Assessments held within the club.

a)      STAR 1-5 Assessments

The following assessments will take place during regular skating sessions and will be evaluated by Coach Assessors:

STAR 1-5: Dance, Freeskate Elements, Freeskate Program, Artistic and Skills

Qualified Coach Assessors may also evaluate STAR 6 - Gold Skills during regular skating sessions if qualified to do so and deemed necessary.

The cost for STAR assessments that take place during regular skating sessions is $12 per assessment which is set by Skate Canada. Payment must be made prior to the assessment taking place. Payment can be made by purchasing assessment tickets on the PCSC Website. Individual ticket numbers different from the invoice numbers can be found for each assessment purchased. The individual ticket numbers must be provided to the Coach Assessor prior to the assessment taking place. Coaches must indicate the ticket number on each assessment sheet and provide each assessment sheet to the Assessment Chair within 15 days from the assessment date. Both physical and digital copies are acceptable. Skaters are to retain a copy of the lower portion of the completed assessment sheet. The Assessment Chair must submit the results of the assessments to Skate Canada within 30 days of the assessment date.

b)      STAR 6 – Gold Assessments

STAR 6 - Gold assessments will take place during pre-scheduled Assessment Days throughout the year. The PCSC Board will determine the Assessment Days when creating schedules for each skating season. A qualified Evaluator will be brought in to assess the skaters participating in the Assessment Day. Skaters must be in good standing with the club and up to date with all payments to participate in Assessment Days.

The following deadlines apply to each Assessment Day unless otherwise specified by the Assessment Chair:

c)      Tentative list of assessments – Coaches must submit the list at least 3-4 weeks before the Assessment Day

d)      Final pull date - 2 weeks before the Assessment Day

e)      Requests for accommodations - 2 weeks before the Assessment Day

f)       Payment due date – no later than 1 week before the Assessment Day

g)      Posted schedule – no later than 1 week before the Assessment Day

h)      The cost per assessment is $20 which includes the Skate Canada fee and PCSC’s administrative fee which covers costs such as ice-time, travel expenses for the Evaluator, processing fees, etc. Payment can be made through the PCSC Website. Skaters will not be permitted to participate in an Assessment Day if payment is not received before the deadline. If a skater is not pulled before the deadline and does not skate for reasons that are not due to unforeseen circumstances, the payment is still required.

i)       If a higher assessment was conditional on passing a lower assessment and the skater did not pass the lower assessment, the paid assessment fee will be carried over and applied to the next Assessment Day for the skater.

 Guest Skating

·        Guest skating will be charged at a fee of $25 per session and $30 for non-home club members per session.

·       Guest skaters must be qualified for the skating session on which they wish to skate:

Star 1 Session -- Skater must be working on Star 1 Tests

Star 2 Session -- Skater must have completed 2 Star 2 Tests

Star 3 Session -- Skater must have completed 3 Star 3 Tests

Star 4 Session -- Skater must have completed 3 Star 4 Tests

Star 5 Session -- Skater must have completed 1 part of Star 5 Freeskate and 1 Star 6 Test

·       Contact the skater’s coach to ensure that there is space on the session when the guest pass will be used.

·       Guest Skating Passes can be purchased directly through the PCSC Website under Guest Skating and must be provided at the time of the skate.

·       Non-Club members must confirm that space is available on a session by emailing registrar@portcreditfsc.ca. Once confirmation is received, the skater must purchase Guest Passes online once an account has been created on the PCSC website log-in page. Please include the current Skate Canada number in the skater/participant profile as the Skate Canada fee must be paid prior to the session.

Session Changes

·         If it becomes necessary to change the session on which a skater is registered, please contact the registrar at: registrar@portcreditfsc.ca. Changes are subject to availability.

  •        One session change per skating program will be permitted at no charge.
  •        Additional session changes will incur a Change Session Fee.
  •         The difference in program fees must be paid before the skater can switch sessions.
  •        Session changes because of a skater graduating into a higher-level program will not incur a change session fee, but the difference in program fees must be paid before the skater can switch sessions.

 Session Cancellation Policy

  • In cases of inclement weather, check the PCSC website and PCSC social media for updates/information regarding skating cancellation and arena closures.
  • No make-up sessions or refund will be provided due to cancelled sessions beyond our control.

 Make-Up Sessions

  • “Make-up” sessions are not factored into program fees.  A skater cannot skate another day to make-up for a missed session.
  • Scheduled club events (e.g. test days) are calculated into program fees and therefore not considered a missed session.

COVID-19 Guidelines

·       The PCSC continues to monitor the impact that COVID has on our programming and coaches and will continue to respond as required.

·        The club continues to follow all Peel Public Health Guidelines related to COVID.

·        Masking is not mandatory however PCSC does continue to strongly encourage all skaters wear a medical grade mask to protect themselves and others on the ice.

·        Please be aware that for many of our coaches, coaching at the club is their only source of income, and being sick and unable to coach impacts their livelihood.  As a result, the coaches may ask skaters to wear a mask during private lessons, and/or may maintain physical distancing from unmasked skaters.  Our coaches are all professionals who care for the skaters and will continue to coach to the best of their ability.

·        PCSC does ask that skaters continue to screen for symptoms prior to coming to the rink.  Skaters who display any possible COVID symptoms may be asked to either wear a mask or to leave the ice.

·      As a reminder, should the skater or a family member be exposed to, or test positive for, COVID, PCSC asks that skaters follow the current Ontario COVID Guidelines for quarantining and masking.
